SPECIAL EVENT!

ARRL is sponsoring the annual January VHF Contest for VHF and Up communications.

January 20-22, 2018 - Begins 1900 UTC Saturday, ends 0359 UTC Monday

If you have ever had an interest in VHF communications outside of using repeaters, in just about two weeks from now, the ARRL is sponsoring the annual January VHF Contest for VHF and Up communications.

The ARRL January VHF "Contest" is an excellent opportunity to try new modes and methods of communications, test radios and antennas out, and do so with a larger population of users of these "higher" bands being on the air and without the additional stress or frustration that could occur in one of the larger contest events. You can operate from home, portable, just about any location,- much like Field Day - and participate for a few hours or the whole event.

We have new digital modes that have recently evolved and are now in wide use across all of the bands and for VHF folks, especially six meters, that allow very modest stations to communicate over distances not previously possible. This time of year is also an interesting time for six and two meter propagation, and there are a lot of folks that will be happy to "Elmer" others interested in the hobby and techniques.

In the San Diego Area, our first Saturday of the Month VHF Breakfast at the Spice House Cafe, 9035 Clairemont Mesa Blvd, San Diego, Ca 92123 - Phone (858) 565-1028 will focus as always on good food, camaraderie, and also answering questions for folks interested in VHF communications, as well as providing operating tips and strategies for the actual event taking place on January 20th and 21st.

Parking lot chats and discussions often start at 0845, and breakfast indoors at 0900.
Anyone interested in VHF and VHF DX operations (not just for fun and hobby, but also often to support CERT, ARES, Red Cross and other community radio support teams) are all welcome.
